A schema is a mental structure of concepts that are connected together and allows for the efficient functioning of director systems. Skemp (1979) discusses various qualities that this study used to look at students’ schemas. This case study focuses on a pair of Topology students and their work on a problem involving the product topology on 𝑋 × 𝑌. There were many positive qualities that the students demonstrated, but there were also difficulties with particular connections between concepts.
